It’s really disappointing because I stopped using my actual C-64 after it finally started malfunctioning & really hoped to be able to at least play a few games with an emulator, but I feel like no one could possibly put up with this many technical hassles just to play a few retro games. Maybe it’s a setting, but I can’t understand how to set it up, and there’s no documentation at all that I can find. I’ve got a Retro-USB adapter & an old school ‘Commodore-style’ joystick, a GameSir TS1 gamepad, and the DualShock PS4 controller.

Either way it’s jerky & unresponsive & just nowhere near playable. It doesn’t happen every time – totally random. No matter which joystick I try, it doesn’t seem to understand diagonal input (character on screen stops moving when I try) & was triggering the ‘fire’ button when moving the joystick up. At first the setup looked like it might work, but I quickly ran into trouble. I decided to give Virtual64 another go, this time with my Macbook Pro connected to the TV with an HDMI cable. The problems I had with Vice were mostly just due to the difficulty of the interface & how many games I could launch successfully, only to then have no clue how to start/play them…with the joystick or without. Well, it turns out the problem is a bit more complicated than I thought.
